How To Shave With A Straight Razor

I thought my shaves couldn’t get any better after I upgraded from my Mach5 to an old school safety razor. I was wrong. The first time I shaved with a straight razor, my face looked as smooth as a baby’s behind. But once you have mastered the straight (which typically takes around 100 shaves), you will be able to consistently give yourself a shave that's far better than any shave you've ever had before.

Prepare the face by showering before shaving. This allows moist heat to open pores and soften facial hair. If you are in the habit of shaving ‘pre-shower’, use hot water, or hot, soaked towels for the same effect. Be patient. Warming and moistening the face properly is an important step for several reasons, but mostly because it provides for a close and satisfying nick-free shave. Prep your beard, either by taking a hot shower, or by holding a hot towel against your face. If you opt for the hot towel, soak a small towel in hot water and hold it firmly against your face until it is cool. For best results, apply the hot towel twice.Applying the right pre-shave oil moisturizes the shaving area, helps reduce drag and can act as an antiseptic. For those of you who do not use these products in your shaving regimen, prepare for a “wow, that feels so much better!” moment.

let's give the problem some thought. Short of electrolysis (preferably at an early age), there are only two basic methods of depilation: the electric razor and the blade. Each has its advantages, fewer cuts with the electric, a closer shave (in spite of what the electric razor manufacturers say) with the blade.

Their case is compelling; there are many economic, environmental and functional reasons to use a blade. It's recyclable, notably less expensive than a three pack of Mega-Extreme Quintuple Blade Beard Eradicator With Aloe, and of course, leaves your face smooth and squeaky, like a dolphin.

If you read straight razor descriptions you’ll often see references to the grind. This is the shape. thickness, and flex of the blade edge. The wedge type is the thickest, least flexible ground type.
